CHAPTER 28
Jessie
I GOT BACK TO WORK ONE MINUTE BEFORE NOON. MY BODY WAS STILL tingling after my makeshift rendezvous with Amos. I was in such a good mood the rest of the day, I didnât even mind emptying and cleaning out a dozen stinky bedpans.
When I got off work, I stopped at the market to buy a few things to go with the pig feet Hubert told me he was going to bring home, if he didnât have to go to Mobile. I was on my way to the cashier to pay for my vinegar, yams, and corn pone when somebody tapped me on the shoulder. I whirled around and was surprised to see Glenn and Carrie standing behind me, dressed like they was going to a real fancy event. Glenn had on a starchy-looking white shirt, brown britches with a matching jacket, and a wide-brimmed white hat with a brown feather on the side. Carrie had on a bright green cotton dress and a white silk shawl. Next to them, I felt like a hobo in my plain gray work dress and flat brown moccasins.
âHow you doing, Jessie?â Glenn asked.
âYou ainât been to the house lately,â Carrie said.
âYou been going to one of them other moonshinersâ houses,â Glenn accused.
âNo, I ainât!â I hollered. âI wouldnât be caught dead in one of them other places. I heard a man punched a woman in the nose at that place down the street from yâall.â
âOne thing is for sure, nobody would ever get beat up at our place, especially a woman. I wonât stand for it. I keep my shotgun close by at all times to let folks know I mean business,â Glenn told me with a firm nod.
âI ainât been to visit yâall because I been real busy working on quilts for the church, and doing a slew of other things around the house. And Hubert keeps me running around like a chicken with its head cut off, shopping and going to pay bills and whatnot. Some evenings, Iâm so tired, I go straight to bed after I eat supper.â
Carrie gave me a pitiful look and shook her head. âThatâs a shame. Well, you married a man with a very active life. What did you expect?â
âThatâs all the more reason why you should come visit us and have a few drinks. That way, all of them other things wonât feel like such a load,â Glenn tossed in.
âI know. I was planning to swing by real soon. Maybe even tonight. It all depends on whether or not Hubert has to go somewhere.â I cleared my throat and lowered my voice. âUm . . . I donât want him to know I been coming to visit yâall.â I sniffed and looked from Glenn to Carrie. âYâall ainât got to mention my visits to nobody.â
âGirl, we donât broadcast nobodyâs business. But I canât vouch for none of our guests.â
âPffftt! I ainât worried about them. The folks Iâve seen there so far donât know me
